Es war reiner Zufall. Ich bin wegen internationaler Liebe zum Friseurhandwerk gekommen. Ich komme aus Lima, Peru, und habe meinen Mann hier in Chile vor fast 6 Jahren kennengelernt. Ich habe ihn eines Abends vor Silvester in dieser Diskothek ex Bunker kennengelernt und seit diesem Tag sind wir ein Paar. Das erste Jahr war eine Fernbeziehung, ich ging, er kam, das war gar nicht so einfach. Ich denke, dass das eine Menge Reife braucht, um diesen Punkt zu überwinden, denn das übliche in diesen Fällen ist, dass es keiner von beiden ernst nimnmt, besonders in der schwulen Welt.

Niulton, mein Partner, ist seit mehr als 20 Jahren Friseur, er hat in allen bekannten Friseursalons gearbeitet, wie Leonidas, Romana, Sebastián Ferrer, alle. Mein Hauptberuf ist Zahnarzt und ich habe immer noch meine Praxis in Lima. Ich hatte Stabilität, meine Familie, meine Freunde. Damals sagte meine Mutter, die eine ziemlich starke Persönlichkeit ist, dass ich auf keinen Fall gehen und alles zurücklassen könnte. Ein paar Monate später kündigte Niulton seinen Job, vermietete seine Wohnung und ging nach Lima, er ist sehr erfahren und das gefiel mir. Er kam an, und innerhalb eines Monats hatte er einen Job. Nun, in Wirklichkeit hielten wir es dort nicht lange aus, denn es war nicht so schön wie es sich anhört. Wir konnten nicht einmal Händchen halten, sie wollten uns keine Wohnung vermieten. Warum? Weil wir zwei Männer waren. Peru hat eine Kultur, die ein bisschen homophob ist, ein bisschen altmodisch, auch für Frauen. Hier fühle ich mich freier, es wäre dort unmöglich, meine Nägel so zu lackieren.

Einige Zeit später kam ich also hierher. Bei der Validierung meines Abschlusses, begann ich, mir das Friseurhandwerk genauer anzusehen, und da war etwas, das meine Aufmerksamkeit erregte. Ich weiß, dass ich handwerklich begabt bin, und ich habe gesagt, ich mache einen Kurs und schaue, was passiert. Und es hat mir gefallen. Ich sage, das Friseurhandwerk hat mich gefunden. Mein erster Friseurjob war bei BoB Studio, einem Friseursalon, in dem viel mit Fantasiefarben gearbeitet wird. Das hat mich überzeugt. Wäre ich zu einem traditionelleren Friseur gegangen, wäre ich vielleicht nicht in diesem Bereich geblieben. Ich mag auch den Überraschungsfaktor, das hält mich am Leben, alle Kunden sind anders und verlangen andere Dinge.

Im Jahr 2022 sagten wir uns: „Wir wollen unser eigener Chef sein“, und so gründeten wir unseren eigenen Friseursalon namens Nich Hair Studio in Providencia. Für uns ist das Wichtigste, den Kunden zu verstehen und eine Vorevaluierung durchzuführen, bevor wir beginnen. Normalerweise nehmen wir uns etwa 10 Minuten Zeit, um zu erfassen, was die Person möchte, und mischen es mit dem, was wirklich möglich ist, was normalerweise 50/50 ist. Die Herausforderung besteht darin, den besten Weg zu finden, um die Erwartungen der Kundinnen zu erfüllen, die hoch sind, weil ich fast 95 % Frauen betreue. Ich weiß nicht, ich habe mehr Gefühl bei ihnen. Ich weiß nicht, das muss an der Schule liegen, an dem Mobbing. Und siehe da, am Ende wurde ich zum Klischee… schwul und Friseur.

Mit unentschlossenen Menschen ist es, als würde man eine Mandarine schälen oder die Schichten einer Zwiebel abziehen, bis man versteht, was sie wollen. Es hängt nicht so sehr vom Alter ab, Ich denke sogar, dass die Jüngeren selbstbewusster als die Älteren sind, sie bringen Fotos als Referenz mit, sie sagen dir, ich will dies, ich will das. Dagegen neigen ältere Frauen, dir Fragen zu stellen und dir die ganze Verantwortung zu übertragen.

Es gibt schon Dinge, die sich verändert haben. Ich sehe, dass Frauen mit super traditionellen Berufen sich jetzt trauen, lässige Haarschnitte und andere Haarfarben zu tragen. Ich glaube, dass die Gesellschaft heute weniger einheitlich ist, und das gefällt mir. Wie ich meinen Kundeninnen immer sage: Das Leben ist eins, wir sollten keine Angst vor Veränderungen haben.

Heutzutage habe ich das Gefühl, dass die Technologie uns in Zukunft ersetzen wird, und das macht mir Angst! Denn ich glaube, dass es uns Friseure irgendwann nicht mehr geben wird, wenn man jetzt schon mit der künstlichen Intelligenz Stimmen duplizieren kann. Du drückst einen Knopf und bekommst die Stimme von Britney Spears. Oder wenn du im Internet nachschaust, gibt es bereits Maschinen, in die du einsteigst und dir die Haare schneidet. Ich weiß nicht, was passieren wird. Aber ich glaube, dass die Qualität und die Erfahrung, die der Kunde in diesem Prozess hat, unersetzlich sind. Dass sie hierherkommt und ihren Kaffee trinkt, uns ihre Probleme erzählt oder sich einfach hinsetzt und die Augen schließt. Dass sie ihren Moment bekommt. Und Ich habe das Gefühl, dass diese Erfahrung nicht nachahmbar ist.

In der Vitrine des Friseursalons haben wir einige dieser alten Friseurwerkzeuge, die aus verschiedenen Ländern zu uns gebracht wurden. Sie sind sehr alt, aber ich glaube, wenn wir sie an die Steckdose anschließen würden, würden einige von ihnen angehen. Die Hälfte von dem, was wir für das Porträt ausgewählt haben, ist Vintage und die andere Hälfte entspricht den Werkzeugen, die ich im Alltag am häufigsten benutze, wie diese silberne Schere für äußerst präzise Schnitte oder das Feather, das ist dieses Rasiermesser mit dem schwarzen Griff, mit einem einzigen Loch. Es wird zum Trimmen, Abnehmen oder Zuschneiden verwendet. Dieses Messer mag ich am liebsten, weil es praktisch eine Verlängerung meines Fingers ist. Der Rest ist reines Styling, reine Show. Denn die Frisur ist eine Fantasie, die nur eine Weile anhält, aber der Schnitt ist das, was bleibt.

It was totally accidental, I arrived at the hairdresser´s because of love. I am from Peru, Lima and I met my husband on a trip to Chile a while ago (5 years). I saw him one night before New Year at the ex-Bunker and from that day on we are a couple. The first year it was a long distance relationship, I went, he came and it was not easy at all. I believe that it takes a lot of maturity to go beyond that point because the most common thing in these cases is that no one takes it seriously, especially in the gay world.

Niulton has been a hairdresser for 20 years. He has worked at well known hairdresser´s, such as Leonidas, Romana and Sebastian Ferrer. I am a dentist by first profession, I had my office installed in Lima. Stability, my family, and a mother with a strong character who did not want me to come. So at the beginning he went to Lima. Niu is very bold and that won me over. He arrived to my country and within a month he had a job. But we did not last long there, it wasn´t as nice as it sounds. Because we could not hold hands on the street or they will not let us rent an apartment, why? because we were two men. Peru has a very homophobic culture, it is more old fashion and conservative, even for women. I can feel free here, look, back there it would be impossible to paint my nails as you see them now.

So some time later I came here. I did the degree validation but at the same time I started to see hairdressing more closely and there was something that caught my attention. I knew that I have quite a bit of manual skills so I took a course and I liked it, I say that hairdressing found me. The first hairdressing job that I had was in Bob Studio, a place where they made a lot of fantasy coloring. That captivated me. The whole part of creating something original. Maybe if I have arrived into a more traditional hairdresser´s I would not have stayed in this trade. Besides I like the surprise factor a lot, that keeps me alive because all the clients are different and ask for different things.

In 2022, we said, ‘We want to be our own boss, so we created our own personalized hair salon called Nich Hair Studio in Providencia. I think that the most important thing is to try to understand the client and make an assessment before starting. I like to make people feel well and to put myself in his or her place so that they don´t have a bad experience. I take 10 minutes to grasp what the person wants and to mix it with what is really possible. It is generally 50/50. So the challenge is to find the best way to meet the clients expectations. They are usually high ones because I serve 95% women. I feel more in tune with them. At school boys bullied me a lot and finally, look, I became the cliché…a gay hairdresser.

With indecisive people it is like peeling a tangerine or removing the layers of an onion. It does not depend on their age, I even think that younger women show more security than adults. Some of them bring reference photos and they tell you they want this or that. Elder ladies, instead, tend to ask you everything and pass the decision on to you. There are also things that have changed. I see today women who have more structured jobs dare to ask for cooler haircuts or fantasy colors. I imagine that society is less uniform now and I love that. As I always tell my clients: we only live once, so let’s not be afraid of change.

Sometimes I feel that technology is going to supplant us. It scares me because I see that hairdressers will not exist anymore. Voices are doubled already with artificial intelligence. You click a button and you hear yourself like Britney Spears or you search on Internet and you see that elsewhere there already machines that can cut your hair. I do not know what is going to happen. But I think that the quality and experience the client has now in the process is irreplaceable. She can come and have a coffee: she can tell us her problems or simply seat down and close her eyes. She can have her own moment. All that experience can not be replicated.

In the hair salon display window we keep those antique tools that friends have sent us from different countries. They are very old, but if we plug them I think they would work. Half of what we choose for the portrait is vintage. And only the other half corresponds to the tools I use daily. Such as that presicion scissors or the feather which is that razor with a black handle and only one hole. It is used to shred the hair, to remove weight or personalize. It is the one that I like best because it is practically an extension of my finger. The rest is just for stylling, for the show lights. Because hairstyle is a fantasy that lasts for just a little while, but the haircut is what remains.
